I spend a lot of time with trees. I find them to be good company. The growth rings of trees are beautiful documentation of life, sometimes long, sometimes short. If one is skilled, one can learn so much from the rings. It is possible to note years when water was ample and years when it was scarce. Trees are in it for the long game and they take their time. The roots of trees are extremely complex and inter-related with all living things around them. It is sometimes referred to as the Wood Wide Web. I have so much more to learn.
This piece is made from dupioni silk, manipulated cotton fabric, bubble wrap, cellophane, plastic shopping bags and discarded high tech power cords. I painted the dots with acrylic black and mounted the whole piece on stretched canvas. It is wired for hanging.
Tree Rings and Roots will be shown at El Barrio Artspace in New York City in a show sponsored by the New York Textile Study Group from May 10, 2023 to May 30. Exhibition hours are 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. My thanks to Eric Hammer to loaning it back to me for this show.
